Ellijay's History
Located 84.5 degrees West Longitude by 34.5 degrees North Latitude, Ellijay, Georgia was once a part of the not-too-clearly defined Spanish territory known as Florida and is said to have most likely become “English" around 1775.
It is believed that the explorer DeSoto along with his followers were the first white people to come to this area upon their exploration of the territory. However, the Cherokee Indians were the first known settlers of the area. Ellijay is located today on the exact site of an original Indian settlement and was and is one of the rare places that retains the same name which means “New Ground Place”. Our Cherokee legacy includes many of the names of the rivers and communities in the surrounding Ellijay area.
Gilmer County was created from the original Cherokee County on December 3, 1832, and in 1856, a portion of Union County. It was named for Former State Governor George R. Gilmer, recognizing his insistence on the removal of Cherokees from the area, as was done in 1838. At present, the county is bounded on the north by Fannin County, to the west by Murray and Gordon Counties, and on the south by Pickens County. In 1834, Ellijay became the seat of the county government.
There are a number of recognized communities within the county, such as Mountaintown, Boardtown, Cartecay, Cherry Log, etc., which have been population centers since early settlement days. Several communities have built clubhouses for community use. Boardtown, Cherry Log, Mountaintown, New Hope, Oakland, and Tails Creek Communities have organized clubs which hold regular meetings and provide activities which draw the residents into a closer relationship. Post Offices are located in Ellijay, East Ellijay, and Cherry Log.
Apple Capital of Georgia
The heart of Ellijay are our Apple Orchards and we are today considered the Apple Capitol of Georgia. Gilmer County began growing apples at the start of the 20th century, and reduced the dependence on cotton for this North Georgia county. When the "cotton bust" roared through in the 1920's, courtesy of a drought and the boll weevil, the apple crop was unaffected. Gilmer suffered less than surrounding counties. Today Gilmer County produces more apples than any other county in the state.
When the Autumn weather arrives with all it’s beauty and colorful leaf change, visitors from around the world come to Gilmer County to partake in our Apple Festivals. Ellijay along with many of the surrounding towns welcome our guests with festivals large and small celebrating the past year, the past century or the current crop.
